APPLY TO BREAKTHROUGH ...

Students at Breakthrough love challenges. In order to become part of the program, the first challenge you need to meet is completing our difficult student application process. The deadline is February 10, 2010. We have a total of 50 spots available for our incoming class in 2010. Not everyone who applies will be accepted.

Step 1: Check Your Qualifications
Remember that only current sixth graders in a Saint Paul Public School can apply to the program. There are other qualifications you need to meet as well. Use this checklist to make sure Breakthrough Saint Paul is right for you. For inspiration, discover why current Breakthrough students applied here.

Step 2: Show Your Parents
Print the 2010 Application and show it to your parents. Talk with your parents about your ability to meet the intense commitment of Breakthrough. Tell them why you want to join. If they have questions, refer them to the Student & Family Liaison.

Step 3: Application Rough Draft
On a separate sheet of paper or using a computer, write the rough drafts to your short answer responses and essay in the student section of the application. Also, remember to give the parent statement to your parents and the two recommendations and grade reports request to your teachers.

Step 4: Revise & Finalize Application
Ask a teacher or other adult to revise your essay and short answer responses. Remember that we look at over twice the number of applications than we can accept, and showing us that you put extra effort into yours will set you apart!

Step 5: Submit By Deadline
Identify who is your official school contact for Breakthrough Saint Paul by calling the office at 651-748-5504. Give the final student and parent statement to your school contact or teacher. Make sure that they get the recommendations and grades turned in as well. The deadline is February 10, 2010.

OVERWHELMED? SOME WORDS OF INSPIRATION ...
"Breakthrough is a pretty good program and anybody who applies to it and gets lucky enough to actually be accepted, then more power to them because I know it is really hard. It took me like two weeks to get my sentences right to actually put it on the application. I was writing it on separate pieces of paper, asking other people if it sounded right, and then I’d actually write it on the application…It was worth it."
