Summer Learni' Havin' a Blast!

Math:

Kitchen Mathematics ... Math in the kitchen? Believe it or not, math can be very tasty. Add one to two eggs, X cups of flour, Y cups of sugar and PRESTO! you have the basis for most desserts. In this class, we will learn how to measure, incorporating the use of fractions to double or triple a recipe or to cut it in half. We will also practice multiplication and division when analyzing the different recipes. So get your apron ready and prepare to make mathematical masterpieces in the kitchen!

Sports, Games, and Math, Oh My! ...Who thought math could be so fun?! Through the study of various sports and games, we will delve into the world of a great variety of mathematical concepts. In particular, we will analyze the math involved in basketball, baseball, football, the Olympics, and in numerous games from different cultures. By looking at different aspects (and taking part in different aspects) of these sports and games, students will learn and grow in their knowledge of mathematical concepts and skills such as probabilities, fractions, decimals, percents, number operations, graphing, measurement, and basic geometry.

Traveling Through Math ... Have you ever wanted to travel to another country, but don’t know how to manage finances, use conversions or plan for time and other factors? In this class we will not only plan the trip, we will embark on the journey, encountering adventures of shopping, temperature conversions and cooking, all through the lens of math. We will discover the way math dictates so much of our quest, from which bank’s interest rate we use, to how much volume a doubled recipe of a popular dish demands. Math will be interpreted as an event of daily life as we investigate the tools it gives us to explore and expand our world.

Breakthrough Home Makeover - Which Line Is It Anyway? ... Have you ever wondered how engineers and architects know exactly how to build a house? They all study geometry, the art of measuring lines, points, circles, triangles and any other shapes you can think of! Learn about the difference between a rhombus and a rectangle, the circumference and the circumcircle or a midpoint and an endpoint! With your knowledge of construction and logic you will eventually design a building of the future!

Money and Math ... How much will I save on this sale item? How much will my college loans cost me overall? Money is a crucial part of our lives. In this class we will learn all about money, even some things you likely never thought of before! We’ll cover all sorts of topics: taxes, percentages, ratios, decimals, and even the area, perimeter and circumference of money!

Reality Check Math ... “When are we ever going to use math?” After this class, you will be able to answer this question one way, by saying “to challenge issues around us.” In this class, you will learn and use mathematics by looking at common issues in society that currently or in the future will affect young people. That’s YOU! Through your learning, you will see how you can question society, analyze and make decisions about society, and inform others about reality. You hold the world in your hands. Do what you can with it. Find the truth!

Science:

Breakthrough CSI ... Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a crime scene investigator? In this class we will explore the diverse field of Forensics. Apart from analyzing a crime scene, we will learn the scientific method by exploring fingerprints, analyzing blood splatter, comparing hair and fiber and many other aspects of scientific techniques used by a criminalist.

Sounds Like Science! ... Hearing and seeing are a huge part of how we interact with our environments. Let's take a look at what sound and light actually are. They're waves! Through the course of this class we can explore what sound and light waves are, how they act, what happens when waves collide and much more! We'll have to sharpen up our critical thinking skills to investigate the properties of sound and light. Let's find out how instruments work and use hands on demonstrations to help us visualize what we can't see in real life.

Go Green! ... Global warming is a commonly used phrase in the media, but what does it really mean? In this class we will look at the earth’s atmosphere and how it sustains our planet. We will study the different functions of the atmosphere and some of the cycles it contains, such as the water cycle and photosynthesis. With this information we will talk about what global warming is and why it is occurring. Students will create a one-variable experiment to explore the greenhouse effect, and at the end of the unit you will discover how YOU can make a difference to help save our planet!

Iron Chef Breakthrough ... Do you ever wonder what all those names and numbers on the nutritional facts of food products really mean? When it says iron, does it really mean you could build a playground out of raisins? In this class, we will take a closer look at what we eat. We will discover what food is made of, how different ingredients affect a recipe and how food interacts with the world around us.

Cells - Building Blocks of Life ... Were worms created from rain hitting the ground? Do flies come from dirty rags and filth? Not quite! In this course we will explore the true foundation of all living things – cells! Through experiments, games, skits and explorations we will learn more about these tiny building bricks of life.

World of Archeology ... An exciting interactive course awaits you! Find out about the world that you live in by examining the past and the present through the lenses of an Archeologist. Throughout this course we will examine ancient civilizations, investigate how the scientific method is incorporated into Archeology, and partake in fascinating experiments. Be ready to explore the world, as you know you know it and have fun- just like Indiana Jones!
