DO IT FOR THE MOMENTS ...

Extra Science Research
"In science class, Rajee did not need much encouragement to begin asking me for extra challenges. Every day, he came up to me after class and asked, 'So what do you have for me today, Carrie?' He performed research on everything from 'Evolution in a Nutshell' to the 'Atmosphere of Venus' to 'Hydrogen Fuel Cells.' Even when there was something that I didn’t understand (like how fossil fuels are actually converted to electricity), Rajee was up to the task, and every time I gave him something new to pursue, he gave an excited little squeal."

Make Breakthrough Law
"My students wanted to create a law for BSP using the legislative process. I joked around with them and said that they could as long as they didn’t do something like create a holiday where they don’t have to come to BSP. The students immediately responded by saying 'No way, BSP is the best thing I do all summer. We would never try to cancel it.' This served as a reminder for how important this program is to the students."

A Special Phone Call
"Celebration finished up on Saturday night. On Sunday, I was at home recovering, trying to mentally prepare myself for the coming wrap-up week. I definitely didn’t expect to hear from any of my students for a while, least of all the day after Celebration! On the phone was Plia who sounded a bit distraught. She said, 'I don’t think I can go to college because of the money.' I cried out, 'Oh, hun! The last thing you should be worrying about right now is the money. Right now, just focus on keeping your grades up and the money will come to you!' We talked for a few minutes longer, and I gave her all of my contact information. When I hung up, I felt my heart break. That kind of experience doesn’t happen with a normal nine-to-five job. My host mom took one look at me and said, 'You’ve got the teaching bug.' I’m starting to think she’s right."
